Bone marrow transplant 'cured' HIV, German doctors claim Nov 14 2008 DOCTORS claim to have "cured" a patient of the HIV virus by giving him a bone marrow transplant. The man, a 42-year-old American living in Berlin, had been infected with the virus which causes AIDS for more than a decade and also had leukaemia. Two years ago, he was given a transplant using stem cells from a donor with a natural genetic resistance to HIV. Doctors say he has not shown signs of either disease since then. Dr Gero Hutter, who led the treatment, said he used marrow with a natural variant of the CCR5 gene, known to protect between one and three per cent of Europeans from HIV infection. He said: "As of today, more than 20 months after the successful transplant, no HIV can be detected in the patient." But he added: "The virus is tricky. It can always return." HIV has no known cure, although cocktails of drugs can keep the virus suppressed, sometimes to undetectable levels.
